Condo Energy Rebate Petition to be tabled in the Alberta Legislature

Our Affordability Energy Rebate petition on behalf of Condo Owners not currently getting the Electricity Rebate or other energy rebates is now closed.

We want to let you know that our petition asking for increased fairness and eligibility in the Electricity and Natural Gas rebates for Condominium Owners has come to end as of noon on March 22nd, 2023.

We have accomplished what we set out to do in a meeting with Minister Matt Jones and his team at the Ministry of Affordability and Utilities.

They have assured us that changes will be coming soon to allow Condominium Owners in sub-meter and single-meter multi-family buildings to apply or their Boards to apply.

To provide closure to the hundreds of Condo Owners and Condominium Boards that have signed our petition we have asked the opposition to table our petition in the Legislature. Hence, it becomes part of this legislative session. We were happy to see this petition tabled on Thursday afternoon, March 23rd by MLA for Edmonton-Riverview Lori Sigurdson.

In a perfect world, we hoped that when the petition was tabled and questions are asked, the Minister can give the house some positive comments on the work on this issue that his Ministry has been working on, and when we might be able to expect these changes.

In the meetings we’ve had we feel that progress has been made. The only question we still have is whether we can see these changes made before the election campaign starts?. Unfortunately Minister Jones just continue to provide an intention to act, but no specifics as to when this would happen.

We thank our supporters for their interest and support, We will update everyone as soon as changes are made.

DOLLARS AND SENSE

Condominium corporations benefit greatly when board members have financial knowledge and follow common-sense financial management processes. Does your condo board include at least one person with financial experience, who can analyze and clearly communicate the condominium corporation’s current and forecast financial position to other board members and all owners?

Condominium Rebates and the Election Conundrum

On March 23rd COF Board Members Terry Gibson and Phil Rosenzweig were invited to he Alberta Legislature to be there when the petition that was launched on February 3rd 2023 was tabled in the House. During that session, which turned out to be the last session of the 30th Legislature, NDP MLA for Edmonton-Riverview Lori Sigurdson was able to ask Affordability and Utilities Minister Matt Jones several questions regarding the affordability program which we see as still inherently unfair to many Owners and Tenants in Multi Family buildings.

Is Your Condo Counting Special Resolutions Properly? Bill 19: Changes to Voting Procedures

The predominant concern appears to be that the proposed legislative amendments will create confusion, not clarity, and that passing special resolutions will be made much more difficult and costly in terms of imposing additional administrative requirements. Many of these inquiries have also assumed that calculating the result of a special resolution vote is based on the total number of units in a condominium. As I will explain, this is incorrect.
